Proposal for the comprehensive exam (Spring 2025)
My doctoral project is a research-creation in data physicalization. It aims to explore the potential of material representations for cultural data, based on my previous experience in data visualisation. This work is founded, firstly, on current research in data visualisation, cartography and human-computer interfaces. Secondly, art, design, and craft practices at the crossroads of textility and algorithmics act as transdisciplinary inspirations. Thinking of craft as technology and of technology as craft, I would like to create sensation-al experiences as new ways to discover cultural data.
For the comprehensive exam, a data physicalization protocol will be introduced and put to the test with data from the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. This experience aims to further the developping notion of data counter-curation. This protocol puts a particular emphasis on documenting choices, steps and iterations, so as to make the process as tangible as the data itself.
